Prop Firm Consistency Rule Explained (With Calculator)
By Jacob Walder (pen name), last checked 2026-10-13
TL;DR
- A consistency rule caps your best day as a share of total profit.
- Check: best day ÷ total profit.
- If over the cap, you need total profit of best day ÷ cap.
- Some firms apply it in evaluation only, some at payout, some not at all.
- Spread profit over more days and stop after a very big day.
Honest risk note: most challenge buyers fail. Nothing here is financial advice.
What it is
With a 40% rule, no single day may be more than 40% of your total profit. Make $1,200 on your best day and $2,500 in total: 48%, over the cap. You'd need $1,200 ÷ 0.40 = $3,000 total, so $500 more, without a new best day.
Pro note: definitions differ. Some firms compare against the profit target rather than realised total, some count gross winning days, and some treat exactly hitting the cap as a breach. Use the firm's wording.
Consistency calculator
Educational tool, not advice. It does arithmetic on the numbers you enter. It can't predict whether you pass. Firm presets use rules we verified on each firm's site; always check the firm's current rules.
Your single most profitable day so far, in dollars.
Your total profit so far (net of losing days), in dollars.
The most your best day may be, as a % of total profit. Check your firm's rule.
Optional. Used to show the most you can make per day on the way to the target.
Minimum profitable days
Arithmetic, not a rule: at a 50% cap you need at least 2 profitable days, at 40% at least 3, at 30% at least 4, at 20% at least 5. In practice you need more, because days are never equal.

How to stay inside it
- Set a daily profit cap a little under the allowed share of your target.
- After a very big day, trade smaller for the next sessions.
- Check whether the rule applies in evaluation, at payout, or both.
- Prefer firms with no consistency rule if your style has a few big days.
FAQ
How do I calculate the consistency rule?
Divide your best day's profit by your total profit. If the result is above the cap, the total you need is best day ÷ cap.
Does breaking the consistency rule fail my account?
It depends on the firm. Often it delays the pass or the payout until other days catch up. Check the rule wording.
