New to prop firms? Start here.

Five minutes to understand how this works, and how most people lose money on it.

Honest risk note: most people who buy a challenge fail it. Firms that publish figures report low pass rates. Tradeify, for example, discloses that 17.2% of its evaluation accounts passed (Aug 2025 to Jul 2026) source, and E8 reported a 17.7% pass rate for 2023 to 2024 source. Only spend what you're happy to lose.

What is a prop firm?

A “prop firm” sells you a trading test. You trade a practice (simulated) account under strict rules. Pass, and you get a funded account (usually still simulated) where the firm pays you a share of the profits you make. You never deposit trading capital; your cost is the test fee.

How a challenge works

  1. Pick a firm, market and size (e.g. a $50k futures or $100k forex account) and pay the fee.
  2. Trade to the profit target without breaking the daily loss limit or max drawdown. Some tests have two phases (one-step vs two-step).
  3. Meet any extra rules: minimum days, consistency, news restrictions.
  4. Get funded (some futures firms charge an activation fee here).
  5. Request payouts on the firm's schedule and keep your split. Break a rule on the funded account and it's closed.

How the firms make money

Mostly from test fees and resets. Because most buyers fail, fees from many traders fund payouts to the few who succeed. That isn't automatically a scam, but it means the firm earns more when rules are hard to follow, so read them carefully. Breakout, for example, states this conflict of interest openly in its disclosures source.

Pick a firm in 3 questions

  1. What do you trade? Futures, forex/CFDs or crypto.
  2. How do you trade? Hold trades through big swings → prefer static or end-of-day drawdown over intraday trailing. Need time → pick no time limit.
  3. What can you afford to lose? Assume you may need several attempts. Start with the smallest account size.
